Week 4 Pariticipation

The disaster began on April 22, 2010 which lead to immediate response from several agencies. These agencies all need accurate information in a timely manner GIS meets these requirements, as the data became available GIS displayed the mass of information in a project viewable to all. This allowed different groups to make decisions.

The Coast Guard started conducting over flights to take the flow of oil. This allowed Louisiana local recovery agencies to move assets into area where possible oil would possibly hit the coast line. They began by building coastal defense barriers, which stop the flow of oil into sensitive marsh areas. Marsh damage would take years to recover from such a disaster. The recovery would take almost 15 years to return it’s pre-disaster. The EPA was able to direct which acts BP could use including oil burning, dispersion agents, or floating barriers. I can't overstate how important it is to get the oil off the surface of the water by burning off the surface oil. Then, the hardened tar balls that are left over can be removed from the water with nets or skimmers. This all can be tracked and delivered by GIS.

GIS also has the ability to allow a complex problem like an oil spill, to be explained to the local public. GIS has shown where the oil is, how it is moving, and who will be affected by the spill. Displaying where the oil is allows the public to demand action from the government. This enables a geographical location to prepare for the potential impact of the disaster, there by lessening damage to the local environment. If the oil gets into the Gulf Stream, this would move the oil at a rapid pace around the coast of Florida and onto the shores on North Carolina. The news agencies gave accurate and relevant information in a timely manner. Days following the disaster CNN had fully functioning GIS products online giving them the advantage in information flow. This publicity increased advertising dollars and traffic flow on Internet websites regarding both CNN, and use of GIS products, thus GIS gave more people access to relevant information at a timely manner then in recent years.

The development of GIS has given information to at a much larger quality and quantity. This has caused the response to disaster more officiate. The more information provided will lead to a more informed group that can deal with a disaster.

Oil Animation

This was my first work with Animation. I felt it was easy to follow directions. I plan to develope my skills more with this part of ArcGIS.

Week 4 Post

I am still forget full. I posted it to the wrong Blog.

Week 11 Completed

Sorry for the lateness.

Week 11 Pictures

I could not complete the Spatial Analyst Work. The licencse for the tool is not on my e-desktop. I will post the other maps upon getting access to the licencse's.

Week 9 Buffering

1. Intersect. It showed without adding information to the dataset which data intersected each other.

2. Erase. It took the data and removed what intersected the data set.

3. 4. 891,001. 585,747

Extra Credit

This was fun. Not a easy project but hard enough to make you think.

Week 7 Data Edit

This was an interesting lab. I am use the GeoRover toolbar to do most of the work this week. Using Editor toolbar was an additional tool for my kit bag.

Week 6 Georeferencing

This was interesting week of work. It allowed us to move into basic functions of GIS better. It would been a better to use a map of a country or state. It would allow for more understanding of referencing systems. Then the second map would be the one we did this week.

Week 5 Map 3

I hated this exercise. It showed me the things missing in my experince with GIS. The hardest thing was finding the data. I enjoy having someone getting this for me and just letting me use the data. Just my opion.

Week 5 Map 2

This was a very interesting project. I have not worked with the ArcTool Box that much and it help me understand the tools avaiable. I also used the selection tool to allow me to extract Polygon data.

Week 5 Map 1

This is just to show the required data. My other maps had to much information to depict the reqiured data.

Haiti Post 2

This is not a map but a way to show donations. It does not have a geographic picture behind the data but it looks good. Just one guys opion.

Haiti Post

This was a map made to show what some agencies have done to support relief to Haiti. I liked this map because it shows the simple way to display information. It also needs little explanation for the intended audience. Which showed where the donations were going.

Week 5

This was a great way to reinforcing the proper way to format a map. It helped me to look at the map without worring about doing to much work on the data input. Is there a way we can get feed back on projects we have completed?

Week 3 Deliverable 3

I thought it worked best to display the high areas in a dark brown. The earthly tone works best for me.

Week 3 Deliverable 2

This was very difficult for me due to some of the instructions.

Week 3 Deliverable 1

Some details are confusing in the insturctions of this lab.

Week 1 Deliverable 2

I ran into problems with the Page Setup. Once, you make a mistake with the layout it does not allow for an easy fix. It was better to start over from the beginning.
